NC State College of Education doctoral candidate Zarifa Zakaria has received the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Fellowship for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls, AAUW provides funds for scholars and graduate students to conduct research that investigates fundamental issues of the day in educational, social, economic and political fields.

Zakaria’s project “Mentorship for Girls’ Mindset on STEM Education” aims to explore the existing mindsets of school-aged girls regarding STEM education in Bangladesh and how a mentorship program can impact them.

Zakaria’s research focuses on investigating motivational beliefs among teachers and students, particularly, the growth mindset among minorities in STEM. Previously, she has received NC State’s Provost Fellowship in 2017-2018 and the Teach for Bangladesh Fellowship in 2014-2015.
