Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has added to joint appointments with universities and nonprofit research institutions by adding North Carolina State University (NCSU) to the portfolio.

Brian Kritzstein, a PNNL technical and research liaison at the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (LAS) located on NCSU’s Centennial Campus, will now also serve in a joint appointment role reporting to NCSU’s Associate Vice Chancellor for National Security and Special Research Initiatives, Dr. Alyson Wilson. Kritzstein will work on developing and scaling the outreach and collaboration opportunities for the LAS in addition to expanding the national laboratory and university outreach efforts on behalf of NCSU.

“I am very excited at the opportunity to strengthen PNNL’s connection to North Carolina State University,” said Kritzstein. “In addition to an existing cadre of former NCSU alum who are now full-time PNNL staff, we have many mutual capabilities and interest areas, such as 5G technologies, data science, and analytics. This appointment will benefit both institutions and provides an excellent opportunity for staff exchanges and internships, in addition to growing the talent pipeline with NCSU and other top tier partner organizations.”

Leveraging his knowledge in data analytics and visualization applications specific to the national security space, Kritzstein will connect many of PNNL’s extensive capabilities, including computing and analytics, our emerging focus on 5G, and other core areas of research across PNNL with NCSU’s renowned academic research in advanced materials, precision agriculture, and quantum computing.

Kritzstein’s joint appointment with NCSU will focus on designing and executing a strategy for scaling external collaborations with other national laboratory and university partners and work to cultivate and maintain a diverse collection of scientific and research connections with a focus on establishing critical linkages between subject matter experts across organizations.

As PNNL’s ambassador on the NCSU campus, Kritzstein will be able to regularly interact with faculty and students and facilitate mutual access to research projects and scientists. The goal is to give students an opportunity to practice real-world applications while placing PNNL subject matter experts in key mentoring/advising roles for graduate students.

PNNL currently has more than 125 researchers on incoming or outgoing joint appointments at over 30 partner institutions in the United States and abroad. Joint appointments between PNNL and other research institutions elevate the scientific impact and productivity of researchers at both institutions.
