Enrolling in CITI COI Training

If you received notification that you are required to complete Conflict of Interest (COI) training due to receiving funds from the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) or another agency that adheres to PHS COI regulations, please see below for instructions about how to enroll in the appropriate CITI Program course.

To view registration and enrollment instructions, begin by selecting the option below that best describes your situation.

Register with CITI

  1. Use the NC State Single Sign-On link to log in to the CITI Program’s website with your Unity ID and password.
  2. You should see a message asking you to “Associate your SSO account with a CITI Program account”.
  3. Select “I don’t have a CITI Program account and I need to create one.

Enroll in COI Training

  1. Near the top of your CITI Program home page, under the “Institutional Courses” heading, click the View Courses button next to “North Carolina State University”.
  2. Scroll down and click Learner Tools for North Carolina State University.
  3. Click Add a Course.
  4. Disregard the “View instructions page” link at the top; this is an old link to instructions about how to sign up for an IRB course and is not relevant to those enrolling in the COI course.
  5. Select the group that best describes your role or work in response to Question 1. If none of the options fit, select “Group 1: Biomedical Researchers – HSR Basic“. Your response to this question will not affect whether you are enrolled in the correct training course.
  6. Select “Not at this time” in response to Question 2 about enrolling in the Export Controls course.
  7. Select “Not at this time” in response to Question 3 about enrolling in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) course.
  8. Please note that CITI removed Question 4 from the enrollment questionnaire.
  9. Select “Yes” in response to Question 5 about enrolling in the Conflicts of Interest (COI) course.
  10. Select “Not at this time” in response to Question 6 about enrolling in the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course.
  11. Select “No” in response to Question 7 about enrolling in COVID-19 training.
  12. Click Submit.
  13. CITI Conflicts of Interest (NC State University)” should now be listed under your “Courses Ready to Begin”. Click the link to access the course.

Register with CITI

  1. Use the NC State Single Sign-On link to log in to the CITI Program’s website with your Unity ID and password.
  2. If you are taken directly to your CITI Program home page, proceed to the “Enroll in COI Training” section below. Otherwise, proceed to Step 3.
  3. You should see a message asking you to “Associate your SSO account with a CITI Program account”. Select “I already have a CITI Program account.”
  • If you know your CITI Program username and password, enter them and click the “Log In” button.
  • If you have forgotten your CITI Program username and/or password, CITI will provide you with the option to retrieve that information using the “Did you forget your CITI Program account username or password?” link. Alternatively, the COI Administrators can look up your username and/or send you a link to reset your password if you send a request to coi-noi-compliance@ncsu.edu.

NOTE: The steps above will link your existing CITI Program account with your NC State Unity ID. Moving forward, you will be able to log in to the CITI Program’s website using Shibboleth, eliminating the need to keep track of two sets of login credentials.

Enroll in COI Training

  1. Near the top of your CITI Program home page, under the “Institutional Courses” heading, click the View Courses button next to “North Carolina State University”.

  3. Click Add a Course.

  5. Select the group that best describes your role or work in response to Question 1. If none of the options fit, select “Group 1: Biomedical Researchers – HSR Basic“. Your response to this question will not affect whether you are enrolled in the correct training course.
  6. Select “Not at this time” in response to Question 2 about enrolling in the Export Controls course.
  7. Select “Not at this time” in response to Question 3 about enrolling in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) course.

Completion Requirements and Important Notes

  • In order fulfill your COI training requirement and complete the “CITI Conflicts of Interest (NC State University)” course, you must:
    • Complete the “Financial Conflicts of Interest: Overview, Investigator Responsibilities, and COI Rules” module.
    • Complete the “Institutional Responsibilities as They Affect Investigators” module.
    • Complete the “Conflicts of Commitment and Conscience” module.
    • NOTE: Optionally, you may also complete the “Institutional Conflicts of Interest” module, but this is NOT required.
  • IMPORTANT: Depending on how you responded to Question 1 during the enrollment process, CITI may have automatically enrolled you in a “Group 1: Biomedical Researchers” course or other modules. However, you DO NOT need to complete these other modules in order to fulfill your COI training requirement.
  • After you link your CITI Program account to your NC State Unity ID, Single Sign-On will be active. When you log out of CITI thereafter, you MUST use the NC State SSO link to log back into CITI again. If you do NOT use this link when you log in again, the system will not recognize you.
    • NOTE: If the NC State SSO link does not work for you, you may navigate to your CITI Program home page by returning to CITI’s website, clicking “Log In”, clicking “Log In Through My Institution”, and finally scrolling down and selecting “North Carolina State University” from the alphabetized list of organizations.
  • You may navigate back to your list of available courses at any time by clicking the Courses button at the top of CITI’s website.
  • CITI will provide you with a completion report and certificate when you successfully pass the course. They will also notify NC State.
