The IRB values beneficence, justice, and respect for persons. We operationalize these values by practicing transparency, collaboration, education, and communication with researchers and participants.<\/p>\n\n\n      <\/p>\n  <\/details>\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item\" name=\"4nxmqu\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n        <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\"><strong>What We Do and How We Do It<\/strong><\/h2>\n      <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<p>We review all proposed research through the lenses of ethics and compliance before it is implemented by NC State University researchers. As part of this review process, the IRB asks what the research is about, why the research is important, and how the researcher plans to carry out the project \u2014 including who the study participants will be, how the data will be collected and stored, and a number of other important details.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our office maintains common-sense administrative policies to promote the efficient and effective review of all proposed research involving humans. We educate and train others in practical ethics, legal compliance, and social justice as it relates to research with humans \u2014 aiming to minimize risks and maximize benefits. We intervene, when necessary, in research to serve as a participant advocate and an accountability board.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the research process, the IRB serves as an advocate for all people in research, while also serving as the regulatory body that holds researchers accountable to ethical and compliant standards when completing research with human subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Serves on the Convened Full Board?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The IRB convened full board is made up of faculty, staff, students, community members, scientists, and non-scientists. As specified in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-45\/subtitle-A\/subchapter-A\/part-46\/subpart-A\/section-46.107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">45 CFR 46.107(a)<\/a>,&nbsp;<em>board membership shall reflect diversity, including race, gender, and cultural backgrounds and sensitivity to such issues as community attitudes, to promote respect for its advice and counsel in safeguarding the rights and welfare of human subjects.<\/em>&nbsp;These diverse perspectives allow for the convened full board to thoroughly review studies engaging most people. If a study requires expertise that is not represented by the convened full board, the IRB will identify someone appropriate to advocate for that participant group throughout the review process.
