We promote animal welfare and foster compliance by facilitating the efforts of NC State\u2019s scientists and instructors who utilize the animal model in research, education and other scholarly pursuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PAWS is comprised of the office of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)<\/a> and the University Attending Veterinarian<\/a>, both of which report to the Office of Research and Innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n

Meet the University Attending Veterinarian<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Marnie Metzler serves as NC State\u2019s University Attending Veterinarian. She was named Attending Veterinarian in December 2023, after serving in the role on an interim basis for two years prior. <\/p>\n\n\n

\n Dr. Metzler joined NC State as a clinical veterinarian in the College of Veterinary Medicine in September 2021. Before joining NC State, she worked as a staff veterinarian at Charles River Laboratories Discovery Research Services \u2013 Oncology in Morrisville, after serving over four years as the attending veterinarian\/veterinary program manager at Atrium Health in Charlotte, as an employee of the Charles River Laboratories Insourcing Solutions division.\n <\/p>\n \n

Dr. Metzler is a graduate of the University of Florida and received a DVM from NC State University in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights from Biomedical Research Awareness Day 2025<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In celebration of Biomedical Research Awareness Day, held this year on April 17, the College of Sciences (COS) and the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) partnered with Attending Vet Marnie Metzler, the IACUC Office and others on campus to host two special events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COS held an event from 9-10 a.m. at the Biological Research Facility, and CVM hosted an event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in its North Theater.<\/p>\n\n\n
