In this picture, a fluorescently labeled protein is mostly expressed in the lateral root cap (cells on the outer edge of the root) and one population of stem cells called the cortex/endodermal initials (middle two cells). The cortex/endodermal stem cell populations divide twice to form two distinct tissue populations called the endodermis and cortex. Image by Adam Fisher.
