What is it? And why is it so important to our requirements definition process?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As you <a href=\"https:\/\/research.ncsu.edu\/intranet\/era\/2016\/10\/revving-up-the-requirements-team\/\">learned in our last post<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.ncsu.edu\/intranet\/era\/project-teams\/#requirementsteam\">Requirements Team<\/a> has been busy during the last month, mapping current, <\/span><b><i>common<\/i><\/b><b> processes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in research administration across campus. The team has <\/span><b>yet to tackle the differences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> across research administration at NC State. That\u2019s something else to look forward to &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a topic for another blog post in the future!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following is a summary of what process mapping is and why we\u2019re doing it at this stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is it? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Process mapping is an exercise to identify all the steps and decisions in a process in diagrammatic form. It helps represent work processes visually and provides a common understanding of the entire process and specific roles and contributions of process participants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why are we doing it?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To be able to understand the full cost of a new eRA system, we must take into account the magnitude of change it will impose on our existing business processes. It\u2019s not enough to know how much the eRA software will cost or the people supporting the software &#8212; we need to understand the \u201ccost\u201d across all stakeholders to truly understand the cost to the University as a whole. Process mapping allows us to document our current processes so that these can be compared to the processes required by the new eRA system to enable us to identify \u201cfits\u201d and \u201cgaps\u201d and the magnitude of \u201cgaps.\u201d The Requirements Team\u2019s start of this process will help <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> think about the University\u2019s needs in a more strategic way as we start asking you for feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s a basic example of a process map.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> How many of us complete the snooze cycle multiple times each morning?!
