If you haven\u2019t already noticed, we\u2019ve made a subtle \u2014 but meaningful \u2014 change in our communication about this project.<\/span><\/p>\n From this point forward, the \u201ce\u201d in \u201ceRA\u201d will be capitalized and, moreover, will take on a new meaning. <\/span><\/p>\n Specifically, the new system \u2014 provided by InfoEd Global and set to begin implementation in a matter of months \u2014 will no longer be referred to as an <\/span>electronic<\/span><\/i> Research Administration (eRA) system, but rather as an <\/span>Enterprise<\/i><\/b> Research Administration (ERA) system. <\/span><\/p>\n With contracts now officially in place with the vendor and implementation preparations ramping up, we decided that now is the best time to announce this important communication change. <\/span><\/p>\n The reasoning behind this change initiated with the realization that the word \u201celectronic\u201d is a bit redundant, given the highly digitalized environment in which we currently live and work.<\/span><\/p>\n Shortly after, a more important distinction between the ERA project\u2019s philosophy and our current approach to managing research administration was made. <\/span><\/p>\n The new approach<\/span> \u201cfocuses on the entire NC State <\/span>enterprise<\/span><\/i>; not on SPARCS, not on C&G, not on colleges, not on departments, but on the total of the collection of all these parts,\u201d said Executive Sponsor Marc Hoit, Vice Chancellor for Information Technology.<\/span><\/p>\n Hoit said NC State has made great efforts over the last 15 years to find enterprise solutions for most of its core business processes. <\/span><\/p>\n And, being that research and sponsored programs are such a large part of what distinguishes our university, \u201cwe are dedicated to moving to an enterprise-based business approach\u201d for the management of research administration, which \u201cdeserves to be called out in the brand we attach to this large project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n So, while this subtle, yet significant, communication change may seem trivial to an outside observer, we hope we\u2019ve made clear that the reasoning and meaning behind it are both concrete and cogent.<\/span><\/p>\n Stay tuned to this blog for more important <\/span><\/i>ERA<\/i><\/b> system updates.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Contributed by: Matt Simpson New Name If you haven\u2019t already noticed, we\u2019ve made a subtle \u2014 but meaningful \u2014 change in our communication about this project.
