ADD Lab director Dan Thoma and Daniel Miracle (CIV) from Air Force Research Laboratory recently published their outlook and vision for autonomous material research. In this introductory manuscript you can find an analysis of current efforts to establish an autonomous research and development capability focused on Structural materials. Four major themes are defined and developed: artificial intelligence for structural materials; rapid on-demand synthesis (RODS) of bulk (≥100 gm) metallic and ceramic materials; new methods to measure structural materials properties; and strongly coupling materials development and engineering design functions. This analysis was used to organize a workshop in Denver, CO on 20–22 April 2022. Additional details and insights from that workshop are included in the other papers in this viewpoint set. With support from the Office of Nuclear Energy | U.S. Department of Energy, researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory recently completed an important experiment with High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (#HALEU), providing valuable data that could help accelerate designing and licensing reactors to run on this next generation fuel. The team has secured funding for several follow-on projects using their new HALEU test bed, called Deimos – named after one of Mars’ small moons.  Centrus is proud to be pioneering U.S. production of HALEU at our uranium enrichment plant in southern Ohio. https://lnkd.in/eTSya9q8

An excellent article in the MIT Technology Review about Ali Kazemian and his teams research into the development of waterless, sulfur-based lunar and Martian concretes. We are proud at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center to be working with Ali and enhancing the technology maturation of this process/material. Ali and his team recently helped us install the capability to 3D print our first ever sulfur concrete in the MSFC Additive Construction lab (picture in attached article). Looking forward to continued working together to develop technologies for a sustained human presence on the Moon and Mars!

BQP is excited to announce a significant advancement in our CFD research. BQP's hybrid quantum-classical solver can potentially improve how we simulate complex engineering systems, like entire aircraft. This research in #QCFD demonstrated the ability to simulate complex problems on a quantum computer with fewer qubits than millions of traditional computer cores from classical computers. This offers improved accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness compared to classical methods. A huge shoutout to Ferdin Sagai Don Bosco and Dhamotharan S for contributing to this breakthrough. A key highlight of this study is the scalability demonstration of a 2D non-linear transient PDE from 4 to 11 qubits. Additionally, the resource estimation revealed that a jet engine simulation could be solved with 30 logical qubits and 4,000 gates, a significant improvement over the 19.2 million compute cores required by classical HPCs. This breakthrough could enable engineers to simulate entire aircraft for the first time, leading to potential improvements in flight patterns and other critical aspects of aerospace design. On Jan. 8, 2024, the Department of Defense Cornerstone Consortium under the DOD Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment program and the National Imperative for Industrial Skills initiative awarded The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) a contract to develop a sustainable, targeted, workforce training program on the science and engineering of materials for hypersonic applications. ACerS has partnered with the United States Advanced Ceramics Association (USACA) to create a comprehensive hypersonic materials training program. The goal of this program is to target those working in industry, national labs, DOD agencies, and others working in the field who may be outside the reach of academic programs.
