The extensional rheology of biodegradable polymers determines their propensity to be film blown. Polymer Degradation and Stability, 110888. https://lnkd.in/gBFBt4rC   Plastic pollution is a significant environmental problem, especially from single-use packaging. Traditional plastics don’t break down easily, leading to long-lasting pollution. To address this, Samuel Lawless, Bronwyn Laycock, Paul Lant and Steven Pratt from School of Chemical Engineering UQ are exploring biodegradable alternatives. These plastics can break down naturally over time. However, turning biodegradable plastics into thin films (like plastic bags) for packaging remains challenging. But why? This study explored the stretchability (extensional rheology) of the biodegradable and regular plastics in the molten state. This information is used to predict how these plastics can be processed into thin films from film blowing. Plastics tested included: Biodegradable and bioderived plastics * PHA - PHBV - poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) * PHA - PHBH - poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) * PLA - Poly(lactic acid) Biodegradable - fossil-fuel derived * L-PCL - Linear polycaprolactone * C-PCL - Partially cross-linked polycaprolactone  * PBAT - Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) * PBS - Poly(butylene succinate) Conventional / non-biodegradable plastic * LDPE - Low density polyethylene Their findings revealed that plastics with partial crosslinking (C-PCL) or long chain branching are able to be processed into thin films over a wider temperature range for film blowing. While some biodegradable plastics can only be film blown at temperatures slightly above their melting temperature (PBAT, PBS) and others cannot be film blown at all due to low melt strength (PLA, PHBV, PHBH, linear-PCL).   We now understand the polymer architecture required to create thin films through film blowing. We can use this knowledge to help develop bioderived AND biodegradable plastic film alternatives in the future.  🌱🌍♻️
