Interim Vice Chancellor Alyson Wilson to Leave NC State
Wilson has accepted the opportunity to become William & Mary University’s next vice provost for research.

Alyson Wilson, interim vice chancellor for research and innovation, is leaving NC State to become the vice provost for research at William & Mary University. Her last day with NC State is June 27.
Since joining NC State in 2013, Wilson has served in several crucial capacities — most recently by stepping into an interim role when former vice chancellor Mladen Vouk retired in July 2024. It was merely a couple of months prior, in May, that Wilson had been promoted to a senior associate vice chancellor role, in which she became responsible for overseeing the Office of Research Commercialization, National Security and Special Research Initiatives (NSSRI), the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences and the Quantum Initiative.
Wilson created and implemented the model for the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (LAS), which brings together government researchers and analysts, interdisciplinary university faculty and students, and staff from companies, nonprofits, and national laboratories. She developed a collaborative and innovative culture at LAS that has involved hundreds of faculty, students and staff from over 80 partners worldwide to create innovative technology that bolsters national security and improves intelligence analysis.

When Wilson came to NC State’s College of Sciences as a statistics professor over a decade ago, she was recruited here as part of the Data-Driven Science cluster of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program. She joined the ORI leadership team in 2020 and has since worked to develop and strengthen partnerships with industry, government, national laboratories and other academic institutions.
A recognized scholar, Wilson has more than 140 peer-reviewed publications, including three books and a patent, to her name. She is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Statistical Association, a recipient of the NC State University Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award, and a member of NC State’s Research Leadership Academy.
