Funding Opportunities for Women and Underrepresented Minorities

Funding opportunities are available from various external sponsors aimed at promoting research conducted by women and minorities, as these groups have been traditionally underrepresented in disciplines such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The Research Development Office (RDO) seeks to discover and share opportunities of interest with the NC State community.  While the opportunities featured on this page are not exhaustive, it is RDO’s mission to continually add opportunities as we identify them.

Featured Opportunities

National Science Foundation (NSF)

Improving equity and inclusion is critical to advancing STEM faculty, educating America’s future STEM workforce, fostering individual opportunity, and contributing to a thriving U.S. economy. The NSF AGEP program, therefore, seeks to fund grants that advance and enhance the systemic factors that support equity and inclusion and, consequently, mitigate the systemic inequities in the academic profession and workplace. The AGEP program goal to increase the number of historically underrepresented minority faculty is bolstered by the National Science Board’s Vision 2030: Vision for the Future.

Proposal deadlines are track-dependent. Read more about the program for further information.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) seeks proposals that consider systemic barriers to opportunities and benefits, and how these barriers impact access to, retention in, and success in STEM education, research, and workforce development. Collectively, proposals funded by this Program Description will: (1) advance the science and promotion of racial equity in STEM, (2) substantively contribute to removing systemic barriers that impact STEM education, the STEM workforce, and scientific advancement, (3) institutionalize effective and inclusive environments for STEM learning, STEM research, and STEM professionals,  (4) diversify the project leadership (PIs and co-PIs), institutions, ideas, and approaches that NSF funds, and (5) expand the array of epistemologies, perspectives, and experiences in STEM.

Full proposal deadline: 10/11/2022 (targeted)

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

NIAID seeks to further promote diversity in research training and education programs by developing programs that ultimately support the increased participation and retention of undergraduate, graduate, health professional students, postdoctoral fellows, and early career investigators from nationally underrepresented backgrounds as defined in the Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity, NOT-OD-20-031. By supporting educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce, NIAID strives to increase the pool of current and future research investigators from diverse backgrounds, including from groups underrepresented within NIAID mission areas, and facilitate the career advancement and/or transition of participants to the next step in their scientific careers. The mission of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is to conduct and support basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. In addition, NIAID has a unique mandate which requires the Institute to respond to emerging public health threats.

Application due dates: 5/25/2022, 1/25/2023, 5/25/2023

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NHLBI R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce by providing research experiences and related opportunities that can enrich the pool of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including nationally underrepresented groups, who will be available to compete for research opportunities in the mission areas of importance to NHLBI

Application due dates: 8/9/2022, 2/23/2023, 8/9/2023, 2/23/2024

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits R01 grant applications that propose independent research projects that are within the scientific mission areas of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), and All of Us Research Program (All of Us). This program is intended to support Early Stage Investigators and New Investigators  from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the health-related sciences.

Application due dates: 2/22/2023, 2/22/2024

Recurring Opportunities

Several key opportunities occur on an annual basis. RDO has created a calendar of recurring opportunities for women and underrepresented minorities to help you plan and prepare for opportunities of interest.

It is important to note that several opportunities represented in the calendar are limited-submission in nature. Information about these opportunities (designated as LIMITED in the calendar), including all relevant internal deadlines, will be shared on the Limited Submission Opportunities page.

Other Resources

Faculty, staff and students at NC State have access to InfoEd SPIN.  SPIN is a comprehensive database of funding opportunities.

By creating a user profile, you can locate additional opportunities that are available for women and underrepresented minorities across various disciplines. For example, using SPIN’s keyword search options, you can access opportunities available for:

  • Women in Science/Technology/Engineering/Math (STEM)
  • Minorities in Science/Tech/Engineering/Math (STEM)
  • Others, based on your interests and customized searches
