Water Sustainability through Nanotechnology: Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the Solid-Water Interface&#8221; \u2014 building connections across organizations and expertise to develop opportunities for sustainability research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"ncst-fancy-paragraph-fifty is-text wp-block-ncst-fancy-paragraph\">\n                  <p class=\"fancy-paragraph__text fancy-paragraph-left\">\n            The project brought together researchers from NC State, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and RTI International. Their expertise included environmental engineering, chemical engineering, material sciences and water resources. If I have an established record in one area, I have credibility there, but where do you go for funding if you want to try something different? GRIP trusted people with their ideas instead of whether they\u2019re established in a specific area.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Computer Science for All K-12 Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;Computer Science for All K-12 Students&#8221; project brought together researchers specializing in primary and secondary education, computer science education, and education policy to examine various challenges and start creating possible solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe flexible funding wasn\u2019t intimately tied to particular objectives like a research grant,\u201d said Eric Weibe, one of the researchers on the project. \u201cIt really allowed us to coordinate individual disparate lines of work and have a stream of funding that provided resources and opportunities to work together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With GRIP funding, researchers were able to collect pilot data and write proposals for future funding opportunities. A grant from the National Science Foundation, EcoCS, connected the Friday Institute and Reedy Creek Magnet Middle Middle School Center for the Digital Sciences to study computational thinking in school culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3D Printing of Fibrous Tissue Engineered Medical Products: A New Paradigm for Tissue Biofabrication and Therapeutics<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"ncst-fancy-paragraph-fifty is-text wp-block-ncst-fancy-paragraph\">\n                  <p class=\"fancy-paragraph__text fancy-paragraph-left\">\n            The team behind &#8220;3D Printing of Fibrous Tissue Engineered Medical Products: A New Paradigm for Tissue Biofabrication and Therapeutics&#8221; developed a meltblowing unit to create 3D structures from fibers. The researchers created and tested flat sheets with different mechanical properties, tubular structures \u2014 and even a 3D-printed knee meniscus.<br><br>&#8220;This was an opportunity to build a platform that could offer unique structures for various applications,\u201d said Behnam Pourdeyhimi, a primary investigator on the project. \u201cIt also was an opportunity to build an interdisciplinary team that could come together to address some of the grand challenges in tissue engineering.\u201d\u00a0\n          <\/p>\n                \n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-fp-accompaniment\">\n    \n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-fp-image\">\n  <figure class=\"fancy-paragraph__image-container fancy-paragraph__image-square\">\n          <img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \n        decoding=\"async\"\n        class=\"fp-image wp-image-12555\"\n        src=\"https:\/\/research.ncsu.edu\/rdo\/files\/2021\/04\/flexible-3d-printed-vessel-1024x576.jpeg\"\n         alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.ncsu.edu\/rdo\/files\/2021\/04\/flexible-3d-printed-vessel-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/research.ncsu.edu\/rdo\/files\/2021\/04\/flexible-3d-printed-vessel-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/research.ncsu.edu\/rdo\/files\/2021\/04\/flexible-3d-printed-vessel-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/research.ncsu.edu\/rdo\/files\/2021\/04\/flexible-3d-printed-vessel.jpeg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\n         \n      <figcaption class=\"fancy-paragraph-image__caption\">New synthetic soft tissues \u2014 like this aorta \u2014 and new processes to make them are the ultimate goal of an interdisciplinary regenerative medicine project.<\/figcaption>\n      <\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div>\n\n\n              <\/div>\n      \n\n\n\n<p>The team has continued to make structures from newer material, and it has received external funding to keep working in tissue engineering.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"is-style-secondary wp-block-ncst-button\">\n      <a\n        class=\"ncst-block__button-link btn\"\n        href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2019\/06\/revolution-regenerative-medicine\"\n        data-ncst-lightbox=\"false\"\n                      >\n                  <span class=\"text\">Read more about this technology<\/span><span class=\"arrow-indicator\"><svg class=\"wolficon wolficon-arrow-right-bold\" role=\"img\"  aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<use xlink:href=\"#wolficon-arrow-right-bold\">\n\t\t<\/svg><\/span>\n              <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The NCSU\/RTI Program In Genetic Discovery and Prediction (PGDP)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By compiling an unprecedented number of genome-wide association studies, &#8220;The NCSU\/RTI Program In Genetic Discovery and Prediction&#8221; project focused on extracting insights from existing data. The team pursued multiple lines of inquiry, which led to major proposals for centers dedicated to dissecting the relationships among genetics, disease and personalized medicine.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe GRIP mechanism was the perfect vehicle to bring together expertise from NC State and RTI, as well as other groups, such as The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), in order to facilitate interactions and ultimately new projects and proposals that otherwise would not be possible,\u201d said Fred Wright, a primary investigator for the project. \u201cWe have a wealth of statistical genetics expertise at NC State, but less expertise in some aspects of data access, large meta-storage issues, and artificial intelligence applied to personalized medicine. Having funding to engage with these other groups and to pursue large initiatives has been crucial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, researchers are examining proposed mega-studies, which will combine thousands of datasets on disease-gene associations, as well as looking toward expanding natural language processing of the biomedical literature to study new associations of genes with disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electroluminescence Upconverstion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The team behind the &#8220;Electroluminescence Upconversion&#8221; project had a novel idea: combine the energies of two molecules\u2019 excited states to create fluorescence in blue. In LED and other lighting technology, blue molecules die and decompose the fastest, so items often carry more blue material to compensate. But through this upconversion, diodes that emit blue light can last longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe concept was very high-risk,\u201d said Felix Castellano, one of the project\u2019s primary investigators. &#8220;It was an unproven idea at the time. Most funding agencies don\u2019t want to engage in something that\u2019s that high risk unless you have the preliminary data to show you can prove it. The GRIP funding allowed us to do the experiments to get to the proof of principle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since demonstrating proof of principle, the research team has launched a startup company \u2014 New Fusion \u2014 and received U.S. and international patents. Venture capitalists have invested nearly $3 million.
