Does your research involve the use of information collected for a reason other than your proposed research project? This online session will benefit both new and seasoned researchers regarding using secondary data and communicating that with the IRB. Researchers will learn how to articulate their use of secondary information as research data, including use of social media information in their application to the IRB. They will also be able to learn about the public/private and identifiable nature of these tools including how to properly assess the risks to participants and thus design their research.  In this session participants will learn the following:

  • What secondary data/specimens used in research looks like

  • Laws and regulations governing use of secondary data/specimens

  • How to complete your IRB application regarding use of secondary data/specimens

  • Data/sample security and management

  • Review options for the use of secondary data/specimens, issues of consent and secondary data, and information about repositories at NC State.

  • Discussion of navigating online spaces and the issues related to privacy expectations

  • Communicating research design and the risks related to the research and privacy issues in the IRB application

There are no required prerequisites but completion of IRB Basics Part I is recommended.
