Tim Martin

Bio

Tim Martin has been appointed as the Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for New Ventures and Investments at NC State University. In this role, he is responsible for leading the university’s efforts to commercialize innovative research discoveries and drive economic growth both locally and globally. Tim will be overseeing the strategic development of new ventures, advancing intellectual property, and fostering the growth of startup companies across various sectors.

In addition to his primary responsibilities, Tim will serve as Interim Managing Director of the Wolfpack Investor Network (WIN), where he will lead efforts to connect startups with investors and facilitate investment opportunities. He will also manage and enhance key programs aimed at discovering, validating, and strengthening research innovations. Tim will serve as the principal investigator and managing director for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Mid-Atlantic Hub, collaborating with 11 leading research institutions in the region, and oversee the NSF I-Corps Site at NC State, which supports the commercialization of NSF-funded research.

Previously, Tim was the Senior Licensing Associate at the NC State Office of Research Commercialization, where he managed technologies and advised startups in the medtech, biotech, and design industries.

Before his tenure at NC State, Tim led Augment Medical, an NC State startup, through early-stage grant funding and product development. He also worked as a Project Engineer at Yukon Medical in Durham, NC, where he designed Class II pharmaceutical devices for chemotherapy treatment. Tim’s career also includes his role as Assistant Director of KickStart Venture Services at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he managed the Commercialization Award program and created a graduate extern program for startups.

In 2018, Tim joined the University of Georgia as Associate Director for the Startup Program, focusing on mentoring startups through formation, funding, and growth strategies. He launched the Georgia Startup License, an optimized licensing program, and led the NSF I-Corps site, training over 120 teams across 10 cohorts.

Tim earned his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from NC State University and his M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State. His graduate research involved developing nanoporous and thin film metal alloys for medical applications. During his graduate studies, Tim co-founded Augment Medical, a startup focused on patient communication systems for those with communication disabilities.

Outside of work, Tim enjoys spending time with his family—his sons Bennett and Henry, wife Emily, and cat Olive—as well as running and cycling on neighborhood trails.
