Last fiscal year, we helped NC State land multimillion-dollar grants to lead research on semiconductor chip manufacturing; the ethics of artificial intelligence; sustainable sources of protein; and several other subject areas of critical importance to society in the foreseeable future.

Bezos Earth Fund Grant Creates Sustainable Protein Research Hub at NC State

Thanks to a $30 million grant, our university is leading The Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein, which aims to create a biomanufacturing hub for environmentally friendly dietary proteins that are healthy, tasty and affordable.

NC State Receives NSF, NIEHS Funding for New Oceans and Human Health Center

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) granted our university $6.9 million to establish the North Carolina Center for Coastal Algae, People and Environment.

DoD Grants NC State $39.4M to Lead Regional Semiconductor Innovation Hub

The Department of Defense (DoD) grant established CLAWS — a regional innovation hub for wide bandgap semiconductors led by NC State. CLAWS stands for “Commercial Leap Ahead for Wide Bandgap Semiconductors.”

NC State to Launch Center Focused on Ethics of AI

With a $500,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, an interdisciplinary research team — led by scholars in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences — is establishing a center at NC State to explore the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI).

DoD Grants NC State $8.5M to Study Extreme Materials

The Department of Defense (DoD) grant will help establish a center focused on designing materials with extreme properties. The main goal is to create new materials and identify the most needed applications — where extreme temperatures and radiation challenge the capabilities of current materials — such as hypersonic transport, nuclear power and extraterrestrial environments.

New NSF Center Will Advance Textile Industry ‘Greening’

NC State was chosen as a core partner for a regional research effort to advance domestic capacity for textile manufacturing. The North Carolina Textile Innovation and Sustainability Engine — led by The Industrial Commons, a non-profit with a strong reputation within the textile sector — aims to disrupt and revolutionize the $96 billion textile industry.

NC State a Partner on “Ag Tech Corridor” Project

We’re one of six universities kickstarting an agricultural technology corridor across central and eastern North Carolina. The NSF Regional Innovation Engines project is led by N.C. A&T State University and in partnership with East Carolina University, Duke University, Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
