Program of Animal Welfare and Science (PAWS)
PAWS ensures our animal research and teaching is conducted in a manner that's ethical, compliant and consistent with the highest standards of integrity.
We promote animal welfare and foster compliance by facilitating the efforts of NC State’s scientists and instructors who utilize the animal model in research, education and other scholarly pursuits.
PAWS is comprised of the office of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the University Attending Veterinarian, both of which report to the Office of Research and Innovation.
Meet the University Attending Veterinarian
Dr. Marnie Metzler serves as NC State’s University Attending Veterinarian. She was named Attending Veterinarian in December 2023, after serving in the role on an interim basis for two years prior.

Dr. Metzler joined NC State as a clinical veterinarian in the College of Veterinary Medicine in September 2021. Before joining NC State, she worked as a staff veterinarian at Charles River Laboratories Discovery Research Services – Oncology in Morrisville, after serving over four years as the attending veterinarian/veterinary program manager at Atrium Health in Charlotte, as an employee of the Charles River Laboratories Insourcing Solutions division.
Dr. Metzler is a graduate of the University of Florida and received a DVM from NC State University in 2012.

Cats and dogs, mice and bunnies, cows and more were present to help celebrate and promote biomedical research and its benefits.
Biomedical Research Awareness Day is a national event aimed at promoting awareness for the importance of biomedical research. At NC State’s celebratory events, participants got the opportunity to meet our animal heroes and learn about biomedical research while eating pizza and cookies and enjoying animal art, swag, and activities, including a webinar on “Unlocking Prevention: How Vaccine Research in Animals Saves People and Their Pets”.
The events were sponsored by: COS and CVM Associate Deans of Research, CVM SCASLAP Club, the University Attending Vet, IACUC Office, and CVM Laboratory Animal Resources.
