CMIF is a popular venue for outreach activities meant to inspire middle and high school students to pursue a career in the sciences and to bring awareness of scientific breakthroughs to the general public. This is done through programs such as CAALS 3D (Creating Awareness of Agriculture and Life Sciences Disciplines, Degree Programs and Discoveries), which provides hands-on summer research experience to high school students of under-represented groups, mainly from the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham. Other outreach activities include facility tours and public display of scientific images and videos acquired with CMIF instrumentation accompanied by presentations for the general public.
