When PINS Will be Retired

All units have transitioned to using the RED Proposal Development (PD) module, and we will begin sunsetting PINS in late August.

The sun sets on Centennial Campus.

Over this past academic year, we asked the NC State research community to make a significant change by moving from the Project Information and Navigation System (PINS) — a homegrown system that’s been in use for nearly two decades — to the Proposal Development (PD) module of the Research Enterprise Data (RED) system.

We rolled out RED PD to campus in four cycles, the last of which was completed at the end of July.

The ERA project team is incredibly grateful for the invaluable support that PD Champions have provided — along with everyone else across campus who’s helped others transition from PINS to RED PD and spread the word to their colleagues.

And while those who’ve worked here in a research or research administration capacity for a while should already be familiar with RED, we realize that — similar to when RADAR was retired — taking long-used legacy systems like PINS offline can create concern.

By taking a two-stage approach, the ERA project team aims to alleviate those concerns as best as we can. Six weeks before PINS is permanently retired, the ability to create new proposals in PINS will be disabled.

Aug. 25: New Proposal Creation Deactivated

Effective Tuesday, Aug. 25, PINS users will no longer be able to create new proposals or create a copy of a prior proposal. Historical data will remain available in read-only mode.

Proposals submitted in PINS before Aug. 25 will be accessible for editing and submission until PINS is fully retired.

Oct. 6: PINS Taken Offline

PINS will be permanently taken offline on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Proposals created in PINS before Aug. 25 that have not been submitted by Oct. 6 will need to be re-created in RED PD.

In order to satisfy reporting requirements, users will be able to request historical data as needed.

More Information

The PD module rounds out RED’s suite of Sponsored Programs modules. As an enterprise-level system, RED offers several important benefits over NC State’s legacy software applications — including interconnectivity with compliance tracking modules (e.g., IACUC, COI).

If you need assistance using RED PD, you’re encouraged to first contact a PD Champion — users who’ve volunteered to help support others in their unit and serve as the initial point of contact for questions and feedback. For additional support, you can access training materials in the RED Resource Hub. You can also email the RED training team or call the Research Admin and Compliance Helpline at 919.515.4267.
