This online session will help researchers using qualitative methods design participant-centered research and communicate their qualitative research endeavors to the IRB. We will cover:

• Research approaches: phenomenology, grounded theory, case study, ethnography, autoethnography, and narrative inquiry

• Research data collection modes: interviews, focus groups, observations, photovoice, and surveys

• Risks to primary and third party participants and ethical concerns

• Consent, minor assent, and parental permission specific to qualitative research

• Recording (audio/video/screen/movement/online activity) considerations

• Common issues such as mandatory reporting obligations, member-checking, and researcher/participant relationship management that must be accounted for when designing the research

• Basic overview of qualitative data management and security issues
