Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

The Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Core Lab provides state-of-the-art Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) analytical services, training, and consultation.

We serve academic researchers across NC State, the Research Triangle Park (RTP) ecosystem, external educational institutions, and commercial clients nationwide. Our dedicated staff of expert scientists is available to:

  • Train users for independent instrument operation.
  • Execute full-service sample submissions, running experiments and analyzing complex data.
  • Consult on experimental design to identify the optimal spectroscopic methods for your specific research goals.

Our Instrumentation

METRIC hosts an array of high-field, state-of-the-art spectrometers distributed across campus locations (including Polk Hall, Dabney Hall, and Partners III) to support a broad range of molecular structure, dynamics, and characterization applications.

Facility Service & Instrumentation Rates

The facility operates on an hourly fee-for-service model. Advanced data analysis services for complex datasets are also available at established hourly rates. Rates are tier-based depending on institutional affiliation.

While future rate projections are subject to change, users should anticipate adjustments of 2% to 5% annually for long-term grant planning. External industry clients should submit a consultation request for customized project quotes.

Quick Start Guide for Self-use

Gaining Access to the METRIC NMR and EPR Facilities

Avance NEO 500 MHz

Step 1 — Complete Required Safety Training

All users must complete required laboratory safety training before beginning self-use activities.

Required training:

Training registration is completed through Reporter. If you already work in a research laboratory at NC State, you may have already completed this requirement.

Step 2 — Establish Financial Agreements

Before instrument training can be scheduled, the appropriate financial agreements must be active.

Internal NC State Users

External Users

  • A completed signed Services Order Form is required.
  • A Lab Use Agreement is required for onsite work.
  • METRIC staff will assist with ID card access setup.

Step 3 — Request Instrument Training

Once safety and financial requirements are complete:

  • Submit a training request.
  • Hands-on training is required for each instrument before independent access is granted.
  • Initial training sessions typically take approximately one hour, with additional follow-up sessions as needed.

Training covers: safe instrument operation, sample handling, experiment setup, data acquisition and processing, and facility policies and shared-use expectations.

Step 4 — Request Card Access

After successful training completion:

⚠️ Sharing ID cards or granting unauthorized access is strictly prohibited and may result in immediate loss of facility privileges.

NMR Sample Submission

Routine NMR Data Acquisition Performed by Expert Facility Staff — No Instrument Training Required.

600 MHz NMR

Step 1 — Submit a consultation request

  • Submit a Consultation Request. A METRIC MR team member will reach out within one week to discuss your project.

Step 2 — Establish Financial Agreements

Before data collection can be performed, the appropriate financial agreements must be active.

Step 3 — Provide us your sample(s)

  • Samples may be dropped off during normal business hours in Dabney Hall Room 23 or shipped to the following address:
  • METRIC Magnetic Resonance
  • 2620 Yarbrough Drive
  • Raleigh, NC 27695
  • Users requiring after-hours access to Dabney Hall Room 23 should submit a Magnetic Resonance Card Access Request.
  • Please note that staff-assisted sample preparation and data analysis services are billed at the approved hourly rate.
  • For user convenience, commonly used NMR solvents and tubes are available for purchase at cost through the facility.

Need Assistance?

METRIC scientists are available to assist with experiment design, sample preparation, data collection, and interpretation. For assisted-use projects or advanced experiments, please submit a free consultation request.
