This online session will guide researchers on participant-centered study design related to implementing surveys and the compliance related IRB issues that should be addressed. We will cover:

• Survey recruitment methods including email and social media

• Sampling frame uses and screening processes and how to describe that in the IRB application

• Survey delivery modes: online, in person, devices used, software used, third party implementation, etc

• Survey questions and scales in consideration of primary and third party participants, including open-ended questions and the regulatory concerns that the IRB might have

• Surveys targeting minors or other non-dominant communities that has additional (legally required) considerations

• Collection of directly identifiable and indirectly identifiable information on the survey (including discussion of demographics and unique information)

• How to assess, mitigate, and communicate risks to participants from survey research and how the data is collected and used

• Privacy issues and data management for survey data

• Issues related to compensation including collection of information for payment, drawings, etc. 

• Relevant applicable laws and regulations

• Use of survey panels

• Use of surveys for assessment/evaluation AND for research

There are no required prerequisites but completion of IRB Basics Part I is recommended.
