Researchers can achieve societal impact through market adoption of their research, helping make the world a better place. This is achieved through protecting and licensing intellectual property to industry partners and increasingly through the formation of research-based startup companies.

Currently, NC State is ranked #2 in the country, trailing only MIT in the formation of research-based startups per year (amongst all Universities without a human medical school).
