Limited Submission Opportunities
Extramural funding agencies often limit the number of proposals an institution can submit to a specific program. The Research Development Office (RDO) is charged with announcing such programs, managing pre-proposal competitions and selecting proposals to move forward in accord with agency requirements.
Limited Submission Announcements
The RDO strives to identify all limited submission opportunities of interest to the NC State research community, announce these opportunities via RDO’s funding newsletter and select NC State’s most competitive proposals for submission. All such opportunities are also listed in the Limited Submission Current Opportunities table. If you are aware of a limited-submission opportunity that is not posted in the table below, please email limited-submission@ncsu.edu so it can be announced. For strategic purposes, the proposal selection process RDO utilizes for large-scale (~$8 million or more) limited submission opportunities may differ from that outlined below.
Posted
Faculty are required to notify the RDO in a timely manner that they are interested in a particular limited submission opportunity before beginning work on a proposal.
Notification of Interest deadlines for each opportunity identified by the RDO are listed in the table below, underneath “Current Opportunities.”
If interest in a particular opportunity exceeds the institutional limit subsequent to the Notification of Interest deadline, an internal peer review will be scheduled to determine which proposal(s) may move forward to agency submission. If an internal competition is necessary, only those faculty who complete the Notification of Interest form — linked in the table — before the deadline will be eligible to participate.
Non-Posted
If faculty identify a limited submission opportunity that is not listed below, they must email limited-submission@ncsu.edu immediately and contact their College Research Office (CRO). If the RDO is alerted more than 45 days prior to the agency deadline, the opportunity will be posted online and announced via the RDO funding newsletter with a Notification of Interest deadline as described above. If the RDO is made aware of an opportunity less than 45 days prior to the agency deadline, the RDO will initiate an expedited process in which the opportunity will be announced via a special funding newsletter and interested faculty will have a very limited amount of time to indicate their interest. If numbers of interested faculty exceed the institutional limit, an internal competition with an expedited review process will take place that will require quick turnaround times from principal investigators and pre-proposal reviewers. Should you identify an opportunity that is not listed by RDO, please contact us as soon as possible in order to avoid an expedited selection process.
Limited Submission Process
If the number of faculty interested in a particular limited-submission opportunity exceeds the institutional limit, pre-proposal packages are solicited and evaluated by an internal review panel. This review panel is assembled by the RDO and is comprised of domain experts and/or individuals knowledgeable about the specific program opportunity. Each prospective principal investigator (PI) is required to submit a pre-proposal for evaluation by this panel that is aligned with the requirements of the limited-submission opportunity. The RDO will communicate these requirements to all prospective PIs. For example, a pre-proposal may require a brief research plan that addresses matters specific to a given funding opportunity, a CV and a list of references willing to write a letter of support. Following the mandatory Notification of Interest deadline, prospective PIs will be informed no later than the next business day if an internal review is necessary.
The diagram and text below describe the limited submission process in detail.
Current Opportunities
Principal investigators who indicate interest will be notified of their status via email no later than the day after the internal notification deadline. All deadlines are by 5 p.m. unless stated otherwise.

Limited Submission Annual Calendar
Annual limited submission opportunities of broader interest to the NC State research community are included in RDO’s limited submission calendar. The calendar is continuously updated to reflect new opportunities of interest to the NC State community. This calendar is intended to serve as a tool that enables investigators to plan around agency deadlines. RDO will announce all applicable Notification of Interest deadlines for these opportunities and list them in the table above.
