Subaward Overview

When an NC State Principal Investigator (PI) partners with another PI and organization to carry out a portion of a project where the subrecipient PI will be responsible for the design, conduct and reporting of the research awarded to NC State (known as subrecipient or subawardee), the Sponsored Programs office will issue a subaward agreement to allocate a portion of the work to be carried out at the other organization. The subrecipient PI may also be identified as a co-investigator on NC State’s proposal and/or scope of work.

The subrecipient must adhere to applicable federal and/or other program compliance requirements as applicable. In these cases, the organization must have the appropriate facilities to be able to carry out the work, and the organization’s policies and procedures must be sufficient to ensure the responsible use of sponsored funds.

A subaward is not used to issue payments to a contractor or payments to an individual that is a beneficiary of a federal program or other sponsored project. A subaward may be provided through any form of legal agreement, including an agreement that the pass-through entity considers a contract.
