AUTM Highlights Breakthrough Hernia Mesh Technology

Innovation developed by NC State and Duke researchers aims to improve outcomes for hernia patients

A hernia mesh technology developed by North Carolina State University professor Jon Rust and former Duke University associate professor of surgery Howard Levinson has been selected for the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) Better World Project. The national initiative highlights how academic research and technology transfer result in real-world innovations that improve lives.

The featured innovation, now licensed to Deep Blue Medical Advances, led to the development of the T-Line Hernia Mesh, a surgical device designed to reduce complications and improve outcomes in hernia repair procedures. Originally highlighted in NC State’s 2024 Annual Impact Report, the story has now been recognized on a broader platform for its clinical and commercial success.
