Seeing the Invisible: Revealing Hidden Damage with Cameras to Improve Aircraft Safety

Every day, there are more than 45,000 flights carrying 2.9 million airline passengers in the United States alone. While supporting this endeavor, aircraft are subjected to a variety of operational conditions from environmental and human-introduced factors, which can damage or weaken the structure. Bryce Abbott, aerospace engineering Ph.D. candidate, and Fuh-Gwo Yuan, Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NC State, are working on new structural health monitoring technologies to address this. Abbott and Yuan are using computer vision and digital cameras to reveal damage beneath an aircraft’s surface.
