Sunsetting Sanger Sequencing and Fragment Genotyping
Effective Feb. 2, 2026, we will no longer offer Sanger sequencing or fragment genotyping services.
Overview
As part of an effort to streamline our service offerings, GSL is sunsetting our Applied Biosystems 3730xl capillary sequencer — which is used for both Sanger sequencing and fragment genotyping — in February 2026. This webpage covers what customers who rely on us for Sanger sequencing or fragment genotyping need to know.
Alternate Service Providers
For customers in Raleigh and the greater Triangle area, two companies currently have on-campus drop-off boxes to facilitate timely pick-up:
- Eton Biosciences: Services can be purchased through MarketPlace or directly from the provider. Samples can be mailed in or dropped off at one of six on-campus locations.
- Genewiz (from Azenta Life Sciences): Services must be purchased directly from the provider, but the company also offers monthly payment plans for regular customers who require services on a recurring basis. Samples can be mailed in or dropped off at one of over a dozen on-campus locations or shipped to Genewiz labs.
For those outside the Triangle area, several other companies across the country offer equivalent services. Please contact Kelly Sides (kafridey@ncsu.edu) if you need assistance finding alternate service providers.
Upcoming Info Sessions
The GSL will be holding informational sessions with representatives from both Eton and Genewiz. To learn more about each company’s services and how to submit Sanger sequencing orders, we encourage you to attend the sessions if your schedule allows.
- Genewiz Info Session: Tuesday, Dec. 16, 11 a.m. – Noon
- Eton Info Session: Friday, Dec. 19, 1-2 p.m.
Both sessions will take place in the Stephens Room (Thomas Hall, room 3503). Additional sessions will be offered in January, dates TBD.

FAQs
Why is GSL sunsetting these services?
We’re sunsetting Sanger sequencing and fragment genotyping services as part of a broader effort to optimize the value we provide our customers. Several other providers offer these same services at a lower cost. By discontinuing these services, GSL can dedicate more focus and resources to the services that differentiate us.
Who can I go to for Sanger sequencing or fragment genotyping services instead of GSL?
Many companies offer the same services at a lower price point, including two based in the Triangle area — both of which already have on-campus drop boxes for samples.
Will GSL help us prepare samples for submission to alternate service providers?
No, customers will be responsible for working with providers as needed to set up their own account and prepare samples according to each provider’s specific submission guidelines.
How do I place an order with Eton?
Eton is an approved MarketPlace vendor, but orders can also be placed directly through the provider. Refer to these instructions
How do I place an order with Genewiz?
Orders must be placed directly through the provider, as Genewiz is not currently on the NC State MarketPlace. Payment can be made per submission, or you can set up a monthly payment plan. Contact Matthew.Gilson@azenta.com with billing questions.
Can either Eton or Genewiz facilitate same-day service?
Yes, to learn how same-day service requests for each company, please refer to the following guidance or contact:
- Eton Biosciences: tyler@etonbio.com
- Genewiz: Matthew.Gilson@azenta.com

- NOTE: Standard turnaround time for Sanger sequencing is 12-24 hours from sample receipt, with an expedited “Same Day” option available for faster results.
