ORIED oversees two campus research service centers that serve NC State faculty, staff, students and external collaborators. The service centers operate on a fee-recovery basis, providing both staffed services and training on instrumentation for self-service usage.
The Genomic Sciences Laboratory (GSL) provides access to high-throughput DNA sequencing, traditional Sanger sequencing and genotyping, and additional equipment services for functional genomic assays and mapping. The GSL also enables the handling of large numbers of samples via high-throughput robotics and instrumentation, advanced sequencing and sequencing support applications developed by NC State faculty.
The Cellular and Molecular Imaging Facility (CMIF) houses state-of-the-art light microscopes, including a Zeiss LSM 710 confocal system and a Zeiss Z.1 lightsheet microscope. In a addition to training, CMIF offers a two-credit hour course (BIT 595) in confocal microscopy which provides a background in the theory of light microscopy with special emphasis on confocal laser scanning microscopy. Students get hands-on experience with the Zeiss LSM 710 confocal microscope and design their own experiment at the end of the course.
