IACUC News and Updates

This page provides the latest updates from the IACUC Office for the NC State animal research community.

Mallori McKinlay joined the team in September 2023 as our newest IACUC Coordinator. Mallori has over 10 years of experience supporting NC State’s animal program. She can help you with personnel compliance, protocol processing in the RED system and scheduling inspections. Mallori can be reached by email at IACUC_office@ncsu.edu or memckinl@ncsu.edu or by phone at 919.515.9532.

To guide new PIs through the IACUC review process, our website now features a brand-new IACUC Lifecycle — breaking down the five major stages in the lifecycle of an IACUC protocol, including how to submit amendments along with a transition plan for departing PIs and more.

Our Procedures and Guidance page now covers three new topics: Justification for Animal Number Determination, Social Housing, and Breeding in Rodents. We update our Procedures and Guidance on a rotating three-year basis, so please check them regularly.

We have updated the online form for reporting noncompliance or adverse events to the IACUC. Please review the guidance on what should be reported — and always feel free to reach out if you have questions before submitting a report.

  • NC State Personnel: When creating a protocol or amendment in RED, you can now list anyone with an active Unity ID on the personnel page of the form — and grant them either view-only or edit access. Any NC State personnel you list can access the protocol in RED but only those with Edit access can submit an amendment or reply to comments.
    • NOTE: Only the person with the PI boxed check should be assigned the PI role.
  • Source and Transfer Options: You will see new options to check to allow you to receive transferred animals onto your protocol on the Animal Care and Use Page 5a, and to allow transfer as a disposition choice under the Euthanasia page, 5. Transfers will still be subject to veterinary review if the animal is reused.   Herd/ stock use is for agriculture herds or stock dogs that are rented out through CVM LAR.
  • CVM Clinical Studies Core / LAR Veterinary Services Core Use:  this question was added to allow a list of personnel to be maintained for these two groups and to avoid personnel non compliance if the individuals were frequently updated.  If you do not use CVM core services, you can select N/A.

NC State’s research enterprise continues to reach record heights — and research involving live vertebrate animals has steadily increased along with it. As a result, the IACUC’s estimated review timelines needed adjustment.

The Full Committee meets once a month, on the third Thursday. New IACUC protocols and amendments should be submitted at least two weeks prior to monthly Full Committee meetings in order to allow time for pre-review.

Starting in 2024, our estimated review timelines are as follows:

  • Full Committee Review: 6-7 weeks
  • Designated Member Review: 3-5 weeks
  • Administrative Review: 1 week or less

NC State has switched from the AALAS Learning Library to the CITI platform for the training that’s required prior to working with live vertebrate animals.

Registration is now managed through REPORTER. The IACUC office has manually moved all current personnel from the AALAS Learning Library to NC State REPORTER. Personnel detached from AALAS Learning Library will receive an email notifying them of the detachment, but no further action is required. We have updated our IACUC training webpage to reflect the changes, but we appreciate your patience as we continue to work out some kinks.

Helpful Tips:

  • For CITI to sync with REPORTER, NC State affiliated personnel must use their unity ID as the primary email in CITI. For non-affiliated personnel using brickyard, personnel must use the same email address that was used by the IACUC office to create the brickyard account.
  • During the enrollment process, make sure to select the “Adding a Course” option. Refer to our registration instructions for more information.
